school photo140th Anniversary

St. Rose of Lima Academy kicked off the celebration of its 140th Anniversary with a concert by the St. Peter’s by the Sea Orchestra in December 2008. The special evening of beautiful Christmas music was hosted by the Knights of Columbus and provided the funding for all ensuing Anniversary events. The concert was followed by a reception and open house at the start of Catholic Schools’ Week in late January. In the gym, light refreshments as well as photo displays of St. Rose through the years were set out for school families, parishioners, alumni and visitors to enjoy. All were also invited to tour the school at their leisure, and to observe lab demonstrations conducted by students in the recently renovated Oy Ling Chun Science Center.

In March, students participated in a Crazy Hats Day to commemorate the school’s origins in a modest wood building that was formerly a hat factory. Also in March, alumni Jake Dalton and Joe Delano, both class of 1939 and current St. Rose parishioners, along with Sr. Rosalie Curran, class of 1941, treated our 4th through 8th grade students to a presentation about student life at St. Rose during the Depression. The program culminated in a lively discussion as our students peppered our visitors with questions. A St. Rose of Lima history treasure hunt was designed for our preschool through third grade students to introduce them to our academy’s long history in a fun, interactive way. The activity took them on an outdoor tour of significant historical markers and cornerstones around the St. Rose campus; at each stop, the students learned an interesting fact about St. Rose and received a sticker relating to that fact. Each tour ended with a cupcake party in honor of SRL Academy’s 140th birthday.

Ongoing projects in honor of the 140th Anniversary include a movable mural art piece and a time capsule. The art project will showcase Academy and national history from 1869 to the present and incorporate the creative efforts of all of our students. The time capsule, for which items are still being collected, will be sealed at the close of our yearlong celebration in November and located in a place of honor in the school.

Yet to come in the fall are a tree planting in honor of all SRL alumni, tentatively scheduled for October, and a closing liturgy on November 25. The launch of a distinguished alumni program is also in the works. Details and dates are yet to be finalized for these last 140th Anniversary events.
