Good Morning,

I am Stephanie Macaluso, Principal of Paramus Catholic High School who has a sixth-grade grandson at Holy Trinity in Westfield. Last night Holy Trinity and St. Rose of Lima played a basketball game. It was a great game. As I was leaving, I overheard one of the referees state to the other: " That game should have been recorded to show student athletes how to behave with good sportsmanship". They were very good. Your student athletes were very good, coaches were great also. We are doing something right!! God Bless Catholic schools!

Have a good day!

Dr. Stephanie Macaluso, Ed.D.

Ash Wednesday

Everyone from SRLA attended the 9:00 am mass and received ashes or a blessing this morning for Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent.

After mass, the 4th and 5th grades were treated to a special lesson and baking experience with Sr. Sandy, they made Pretzels.

Here is just a bit of history and the significance of the pretzel.

How pretzels became a Lent tradition

Some traditions say that the earliest pretzels were rewards monks gave to their students for reciting their prayers correctly. But they ultimately became popular because of their simple ingredient list. The first pretzels were made with just flour, salt, and water.

Christians in the seventh century followed strict rules about what they could eat during the season of Lent. Meat, dairy, fats, and eggs were all off-limits from Ash Wednesday through Easter. Pretzels could be made with inexpensive ingredients that followed the Lent fasting practices of the time. This made them popular.

The word Pretzel is derived from a German word that means “little arms.” The twisted shape of pretzels is meant to resemble two arms crossed in prayer. Making Lent pretzels is a way to remember that Lent is a season of prayer.

Dear SRLA Families,

Clarification:

A Mask Check is a basket of masks, all sizes and styles for our students who choose to wear masks as well as volunteers, workmen and vendors entering our school.

Please excuse the confusion.

Best,

Principal Underwood

Dear SRLA Families,

As we transition from our mandated mask wearing to optional mask wearing on Monday, March 7th. I would like to make you aware of our enhanced protocols given that the safety of all of our students and staff remain our top priority. Some of our highlighted areas include:

Cleaning Protocol

SRLA will continue to provide deeper, more frequent cleaning and disinfecting throughout the building, a practice that has served us well over the last two years.

Key efforts:

  • Classrooms will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected by our cleaning crew both during the day by Johnny and after school hours by our night cleaning crew.
  • Water fountains/stations will continue to be sanitized regularly; we will continue to cover/disable mouth dispensers so only the bottle-filling option is available for our students. Students who forget their refillable water bottles are offered single Poland Spring water bottles in the office.

Classroom Spaces

Our aim is to use classroom spaces in a way that conforms with the applicable guidelines.

  • Student desks and tables in the classrooms will all face in the same direction
  • Wherever possible, seating will be spaced to allow for the recommended social distancing.
  • Desk shields will remain in place for the remainder of the school year.

Moving Throughout the School

  • All Middle School students will enter and exit through the main door for mask checks each morning and move directly to their homerooms.
  • All students in grades k-4 will enter and exit through the Devine Center door for mask checks and go directly to their homerooms.
  • All Pre-school students will enter and exit through the playground door for mask checks and go directly to their homerooms
  • Students who arrive late will sign in at the main door with Danny and will have a mask check when they receive their late pass for entrance to their homeroom or scheduled class already in progress.

Air Purification

Our goal is to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission by supplying the cleanest and highest quality air possible throughout each and every classroom and public area by using HEPA air purifiers throughout

Key Efforts:

  • Air Purification Systems and UV-C systems (pictured in the Raven Rundown) used in all classrooms to scrub the air and dramatically reduce the viral load in the air

Lunch

Lunch will be served in the cafeteria in four shifts. Four additional tables have been added so that students may be seated in every other seat which allows every student to be socially distanced while eating their lunch. Once the weather turns warmer, we may once again utilize the 16 picnic tables on our grounds.

Remember, our priorities are Safety, Presence and Student growth. I ask that you please refer to the school website for the complete Return-To-School Plan accessible directly from our homepage. https://www.srlacademy.org/
