Dear St. Rose Families,

St. Rose of Lima Parish is an active member of the NJ Coalition Against Human Trafficking, and January each year is designated as Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Our parish record of accomplishments in support of this cause is briefly outlined in the flyer below.

Due to the constraints imposed upon us by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are unable to gather together to replicate our past achievements. However, we are able to again pick up the phone at home and make a call in support of pending New Jersey legislation. Last year you called legislators asking them to vote in favor of a bill known as A883. Your calls, for which we thank you, were so effective that the bill was passed by both the Assembly and the Senate unanimously! The bill awaits the Governor’s signature to make it law.

Please call Governor Phil Murphy at 609-777-2500 to urge him to sign A883 during January, Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Your call will be a contribution to our parish effort on behalf of trafficking victims.

If you would like to learn more about the NJ Coalition, and/or to make a donation to support their important work, please be sure to check out their newly designed website here: safernj.org.

Thank you for your continuing support!

Teachers,

St. Rose will be participating in the St. Jude Math-a-Thon. The event will be held during the week of February 1

  • The week of January 19, I will be placing letters for parents and permission slips with sponsor forms attached in your mailboxes. Please send one of each home with every child as soon as you have them.

-  Permission slips and sponsor forms should be returned no later than Friday January 29. When they are returned, permissions slips should be placed in my mailbox, not sent to the office.

  • From February 1-5, students will be able to complete their Math-a-Thon booklets, or participate online, whichever is preferred. If you would like, you can incorporate them as part of your math lesson (if applicable).

-  I will have the booklets to you by Friday January 29. I will have one for each student, whether their parents sign the permission slip or not (or if they prefer the online version).

-  It is preferred by St. Jude’s that donations are made online (website is listed below).

-  However, if the families find it necessary to send in a check or cash, it should clearly state “St Jude Math-a-thon” on the envelope and be accompanied by the sponsor form.

Also please make sure the student’s name & homeroom is on the envelope. All donations should be turned in no later than Friday February 12

o  Any faculty/staff who would like to make a donation, please let me know. We can put one in as a group as well if that is a preference. (I usually make one, in memory of my sons’ Algebra teacher who lost her son to bone cancer when he was 16.)

Our goal is for the St. Rose community to raise $1500.

Our event webpage can be found at

http://fundraising.stjude.org/SRLA2021

Donations can be made here, and the school’s progress can be checked as well. Please feel free to make this available to friends, family members, neighbors & co-workers as well.

I have a DVD from St. Jude’s with some introductions to the event, and a couple of their patient’s stories, if anyone would like to borrow it to show their class at the start of our event week as well.

If there are any questions, please contact me. We can only make this event a success with everyone’s help.

Dear Parents,

The only constant during the coronavirus pandemic has been change. We have all adopted to meet the needs of our students and staff while ensuring safety for us all. This included classroom modifications to protect our students and staff as well as giving students and staff additional time out of the classroom after Christmas break. Hopefully this strategy has allowed time for potential symptoms of the virus to appear.

Moving forward, Jay (second grade) and Corinne Sirhal (PK-3) will be baptized on January 9th at 2:30 pm in the church.

On Monday, January 11th at 10:30 am, James (kindergarten) and Leigh Falls (sixth grade) will be baptized at 10:30 am in our church. SRLA students will stand by to witness, socially distanced, of course. Please welcome our four newly baptized children to St. Rose of Lima Church.

Important Items for next week:

  • Lunch will be brought from home all next week
  • In-seat instruction will begin again on Monday
  • After-care will start again on Monday afternoon (please remember to let Danny know if your student will be staying)

My continued prayers for Catholic schools, students and educators and all that we have accomplished so far. Thank you parents for believing in us! I do see a glimmer of hope and a feeling of renewal of our devotion to working together to regain purpose and gratitude for what we may be called upon to do in the future.

Have a great weekend,
Principal Underwood

Masks will be distributed in school on January 11th.

If you would like your order in advance, please email Margie Naughton (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and you can arrange to pick up your order from her porch in South Orange.

The mask factory was temporarily closed due to Covid. Due to this delay everyone who paid will be receiving additional masks (example: if you ordered 2 masks, you will be receiving 4 masks).

St. Rose of Lima Parish

Dear Parents,

As the back to school date quickly approaches, there are a few things we as parents can do to help our children experience a successful return. Children spend so much time looking forward to the holidays that the transition back to the second trimester can be a somewhat depressing letdown for some of them. We can help ease the transition back to school for students who have trouble readjusting after a few weeks off by trying some of these ideas.

Ready: Prepare your student for the return by discussing the schedule for the week of January 4-8. We will hold classes virtually and from 8:10-12:10 each day. Although we will have music for our on-line learners in the near future, that will not happen until the week of January 11, 2021. So that means that if you have a music period on your half-day schedule any day next week, you will not have a class that period.

Set: Have a dedicated work area set to go for Monday morning!

School supplies at the ready, devices charged, pads, pens, pencils ready, enjoy a healthy breakfast and a good night's sleep.

Go: Sign-in on time...between 8:10-8:20 am is perfect! Below you will find a special schedule for next week. You will not see every class every day but know that every class is seen the same amount of time over the course of our school year.

Everyone, please remain vigilant and do all that you can to protect yourself and those around you during this transition time.

I send my best wishes to you and your family for a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone either in-person or virtually on January 11th!!!

Sincerely,
Principal Underwood
