Delay In The Switch Over To Winter Uniforms

Dear SRLA Families,

Failing to learn anything from Covid-19, we planned to switch over to winter uniforms just in time for photo day, October 19th (rain date 10/21). Unfortunately, the delay in winter uniforms coming from Flynn and O’Hara necessitates we change the winter uniform date to 11/29/21

So, what does this mean?

  • Students will wear their fall uniform for picture day
  • Students will continue to wear their fall uniforms until 11/29
  • Students may mix and match pieces from their winter uniform, should they have them.
  • The date of 11/29 should allow for everyone to receive their winter uniform.
  • If not, please stay tuned for future updates.
  • Most vendors have struggled with the shipping and in most cases the suppliers were affected as well.

Thank you for your patience,

Principal Underwood

Helpful Email Protocols

Parents,

When emailing when your student will be absent or a dismissal change, please copy your student's teacher and be sure that your e-mail subject line indicates a change in pick up or a student being absent.

It is also helpful to let us know if the student is aware of the change in dismissal.

Please note that it is best if you do not email by replying to a previous email as the subject line such as RE : Lunch menu, RE : Raven Rundown.

Thank you

Raven's Nest Newspaper Parent Letter

Dear Middle School Parents,

I am happy to announce that working on the school newspaper for the 2021-2022 school year has begun! The Raven’s Nest school newspaper will be published three times this year once in the seasons of fall, winter, and spring. As of October 4th, students will be able to participate as “journalists” in various ways such as an editor, writer, illustrator, photographer, or co coordinator.

As discussed in class, meetings will be virtual (no need to worry about pick up) each Monday from 3:30-4:00 through a Google Meet link that is posted on Google Classroom.   Many of your children have signed up for a position and are very excited to be a part of this collaborative effort.

We will be working hard to bring many stories about the events happening at SRLA to the community and cannot wait to bring it one the best school newspapers to life with all our many talents and skills!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

MAP Growth Testing October 6th through October 22nd

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Archdiocese of Newark has transitioned to NWEA MAP Growth for its testing program in the elementary schools. The fall 2021 window for MAP Growth testing in the Archdiocese of Newark elementary schools is from October 4th through October 22nd. St. Rose of Lima will test from October 6th through October 8th. This leaves us plenty of time for make-ups and scheduling challenges. You cannot prepare for the MAP testing, other than enjoy a good night’s sleep and have breakfast!

Testing will be carried out for grades two through seventh (eighth grade will not need to test in the fall as they will be taking the HSPT on November 5th (Eighth grade will resume MAP testing for the winter and spring cycles).

MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test created by NWEA that students take at various times during the school year (fall, winter, spring). Computer adaptive tests adjust to each student’s learning level, providing a unique set of test questions based on the student’s responses to previous questions. If the student answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next question is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what the student knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. The results provide teachers with information to help them deliver appropriate content for each student and monitor each student’s academic growth over time.

The MAP Growth tests are untimed. Most students complete each subject test in less than an hour. Students who do not finish the assessment in the time scheduled for the testing session are able to resume the test at another time without the loss of test responses already submitted. The reports obtained from MAP Growth testing provide information about the student’s level of achievement and his or her growth over time.

For more information about MAP Growth visit:
https://www.nwea.org/parent-toolkit/

Sincerely,
Principal Tina Underwood

Updated Carline Procedure

School Drop-off Protocol

Parents,

We are implementing a slight change to our carline procedure to facilitate a smoother pick-up of children at dismissal. In addition, parent volunteers will be on hand to assist.

New P.M. Carline Procedure:

·     Upon arriving for pickup, please make sure to form 3 lines in the back lot.

·     When instructed by a parent volunteer, the first wave of cars will pull forward into the front lot (prior to school dismissal) to await the students. Cars in the front lot will remain stationary upon dismissal. There is to be no movement until the students are safely in their cars.

·     Once this line is complete, the remaining cars will form 3 pickup lines as usual and await instruction by Mr. Miller to pull forward and proceed as usual.

·     Please ensure anyone picking up your children is made aware of the protocol.

By forming a line in the front lot PRIOR to the arrival of the children, it will help ease parking lot congestion and move the process along more quickly.

Please sign up to volunteer at the car line in afternoons through October 22.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Volunteer with the HSA

Please add your name to lend a hand on our mandatory Volunteer Signup list, which each family agreed to when they registered at SRLA. This signup breaks down the different volunteer opportunities at SRLA so parents can choose where they prefer to participate, or what works best with their schedule.

Simply sign up each parent or guardian for whichever fundraising or volunteering event you'd like to be involved in for the 2021-22 school year. It's that simple! And, don't worry, all events are supported by the HSA so we will be there every step of the way!

*Note: Beginning October 18, 2021, all parent volunteers will be required to provide proof that they have been fully vaccinated or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within the preceding week. Details can be found here.

Ravens Going Bald for a Cause

SRLA 8th Graders Conor and Patrick Naughton, along with their father, Denis, have teamed up to raise money for childhood cancer research.

St. Baldrick's is a national charity that raises money for pediatric cancer research by enlisting volunteers to shave their heads. Volunteer "shavees" request donations from their family and community to sponsor them.

This year's "haircuts" will take place on September 18th at the Shillelagh Club in West Orange, so there is still time to donate to help Conor and Patrick reach their goal!

Mandatory Sign-Up Reminder

We hope everyone is settling well into the new school year! We are so excited to have the school bustling with children and teachers again!

The SRLA HSA, or Home School Association, is our school's liaison between school and home. We work together to raise necessary funds for our operating budget, make improvements to our school, and bring in wonderful programs for our children and their continued education.

Many of you have very generously already signed up to volunteer at our many and varied events. THANK YOU! There are still some slots available, and if you don’t see anything that fits your talents or your schedule, don’t fret, more opportunities will be made available throughout the year. For example, FALL FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL is almost upon us and we will require volunteers to help set up and throughout the evening to ensure it is a great success. Watch out for the sign up for this fun event soon!

Other upcoming events include 8th grade fundraising, class events, Christmas gift giving, and donations for Wish Upon a Star, just to name a few.

So please have a look at the "Mandatory Sign Up" list below, and simply sign up (each parent or guardian). Each family agreed to participate in this when they registered at SRLA. And, don't worry, all events are supported by the HSA so we will be there every step of the way!

Dangerous Drop-Off Practice Must Stop

Dear SRLA Families,

A concerned parent sent me this earlier today.

"Today at drop-off, I noticed that some drivers continue to drive around stopped cars as children are departing the car, and I wanted to bring it to your attention. This has happened to us multiple times, with a vehicle squeezing between the side of my car and the walkway or the median while my children are getting out. It is dangerous."

As a reminder, not a single car should pass a car on the left or the right as they are unloading children in the morning.

Please just take the extra minute to ensure that all of our children are safe and sound on school grounds.

 Remember:

  1. Cars are never allowed to pass other cars during drop-off/pick-up
  2. Students must wait until they are close to the church sidewalk to exit the vehicle
  3. Students should exit the vehicles in a timely manner

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Principal Underwood
